Ask three tradies whether gas or electric hot water is better and you will get three different answers. That is because there is not one right answer for every house. Gas and electric hot water systems both heat water reliably, but the right one for your place depends on how many people are showering before work, what is already connected to your home, and how much space you have got next to the meter box.

Why climate changes the calculation
The Gold Coast does not get the cold snaps that make gas storage worth the extra install cost further inland or down south in the Tablelands. Mild winters mean electric and heat pump systems keep up fine without the strain they would face somewhere colder.
Water heating is one of the biggest energy users in an average Australian home, and the federal government’s household hot water guide puts it at up to 30 percent of household energy use, so the choice does affect your bill either way.
Salt air is the other factor nobody puts in the brochure. Units installed within a few hundred metres of the beach corrode faster. Tank anodes get eaten through years before the warranty assumes they will, and gas fittings exposed to salt air need checking more often than the manual suggests. If you are in Burleigh, Palm Beach or Currumbin right on the coast, that is worth weighing up no matter which system you land on.
Matching the system to your household
Household size decides more than most people expect. As a rough guide:
- One or two people usually get by fine on a smaller storage tank, around 125 to 160 litres, or a compact continuous flow unit.
- Three to four people is where most Gold Coast homes sit, and a 250 litre storage tank or a continuous flow unit rated for simultaneous use is the common pick.
- Five or more, or a house with a spa bath, generally needs either a larger tank or multiple continuous flow units running together, otherwise someone showers cold.
We get plenty of calls where the tank is running dry halfway through the school morning routine. Nine times out of ten it is undersized for the household, not faulty.
Install space and what is already connected
Electric storage tanks need floor or platform space and a dedicated circuit, nothing more. Gas systems, whether storage or continuous flow, need a mains gas connection or bottled LPG, plus clearance for a flue if the unit is flued rather than power vented.
On the older Queenslanders and townhouses we work on around Nerang and Mudgeeraba, the tightest spot is usually the gap between the fence line and the wall. There is often not enough room for the clearances a gas flue needs. If gas does not already run to that side of the house, bringing a new line across adds real cost, and it needs to be worth it for the switch to make sense.

Maintenance is different for each type too
Electric storage tanks are low maintenance day to day, but the sacrificial anode inside the tank needs checking every couple of years. We have pulled anodes out of Gold Coast units that were down to a stub of wire after four years in a coastal postcode, well before the ten year mark the manufacturer expects. Once the anode is gone, the tank itself starts corroding, and that is when you get a slow leak from the base rather than a clean failure.
Gas systems need the flue checked for blockages, the burner cleaned, and the gas connections inspected for corrosion, particularly on units near the coast where salt gets into everything. A gas storage tank that is short cycling or taking longer than usual to heat is often a sign the burner needs a clean rather than a full replacement. Continuous flow gas units also need their heat exchanger flushed periodically in areas with harder bore water, otherwise scale builds up and the flow rate drops.
Neither system is maintenance free. The difference is where the wear shows up first, and how easy that part is to get to when it needs attention.

- Running cost usually favours gas for a household of four or more, but only if you are already connected to mains gas. Paying to bring a new line in can wipe out years of savings.
- Recovery time favours gas storage, which reheats faster after a big draw. That matters in households where showers happen back to back before school or work.
- Install cost usually favours electric if you already have the tank space and no gas connection nearby. There is no flue, no gas line, and less compliance work.
- Power outages knock out a standard electric storage system completely. A gas continuous flow unit with a pilot light will often keep running when the power drops.
- Solar ownership changes the equation again. An electric system running mostly on daytime solar generation can end up cheaper to run than gas, even in a bigger household.
